Jammu:
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Mubarak Gul today allowed discussion on the issue of the return of the body of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru to his family, even as the House witnessed disruptions over the matter.
The Assembly witnessed uproar when a demand was made for the discussion on the issue of execution of Guru, whereas the National Panthers Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Independent MLAs raised slogans, protesting the killing of two policemen in north Kashmir.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti started the debate saying it was "inhumane" that the family of Afzal Guru was not allowed to meet him the last time.
She sought suspension of all the regular business of the House to "discuss this issue of urgent nature".
The ruling National Conference and Communist Party of India-Marxist too wanted discussion on the issue.
Afzal Guru was hanged to death last month after he was found guilty of plotting the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.
His family was informed through speed post which was delivered to his family 48 hours after his execution. He was buried in Delhi's Tihar jail.
His family and major political groups in Kashmir are asking for the return of the body of Afzal Guru.
The issue of this debate had also created fissures between the two ruling parties the National Conference and the Congress. While the NC was in favour of the debate, Congress was opposed to it.
