PM unveils the logo of the Jan Dhan Yojna campaign
Hyderabad:
Jan Pasha has been driving a rented auto for the last 25 years on the streets of Hyderabad.
The 58-year-old's life has been a struggle barely earning 300 rupees a day - a portion of which he has to pay for renting the auto rickshaw.
A bank account, which requires him to deposit Rs 1000, has therefore always been out of reach for this father of three children.
But with a new scheme launched by Prime Minister Modi that elusive bank account is now within the reach of Mr Pasha.
The new scheme named Jan Dhan Yojna will let millions of Indians like Mr Pasha to open accounts with zero-balances.
''they say I can now open a bank account without paying any money. If i can save a few rupees, i can keep in the bank,'' Pasha told NDTV.
The scheme, named through a crowd-sourced contest, aims at having at least one bank account per family.
Under the Jan Dhan Yojana, account holders will get a debit card and accidental insurance cover of up to a lakh. They will also get an overdraft facility of up to Rs. 5,000, after six months.
The Prime Minister, who launched the scheme in New Delhi today said 1.5 crore people had already signed up for accounts.
While Mr Pasha was inquiring at the bank, Shailaja was also trying to open account.
"Since the PM has they will give insurance along with account and also zero-balance, I want to open an account ," she told NDTV.
