New Delhi: Protests over the creation of Telangana have scripted unprecedented scenes in Parliament in the last session before the national election, due by May.
Today, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman PS Kurien shouted "shut up" at a disrupting member, who shouted it right back.
This was shortly after an anti-Telangana member scuffled with the Rajya Sabha Secretary General while trying to snatch papers from him and ended up hitting him on his chin. The member, CM Ramesh of the TDP, apologized to the house later. (Read: Telangana Bill has to wait another day in Rajya Sabha, PM reaches out to BJP)
"You can't attack the staff. Very unfortunate," said Mr Kurien, who was presiding over the Rajya Sabha at the time.
The controversial bill to carve out Telangana by dividing Andhra Pradesh could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha this afternoon, a day after it was passed in the Lok Sabha amid a blackout of live telecast. (LIVE updates)
The main opposition BJP moved 20 amendments to the bill and warned against passing it in chaos, without a proper discussion. This seemed unlikely as anti-Telangana members kept up their protests in the house, rushing to the Well and holding up placards near the Chairman's seat.
"At 4pm today tune into RS TV... It just might become Reality Shame TV," tweeted Trinamool member Derek O'Brien about possible trouble over the Telangana bill.
