A call was made around 2:30 pm about a fire in Khaata at Ghazipur
New Delhi: A huge fire broke out at the dumping yard in east Delhi's Ghazipur area on Monday, sending large clouds of thick black smoke over the city sky.
No casualty has been reported, a fire department official said. The cause of fire is still not known.
According to the fire department, a call was received around 2:30 pm about the fire in Khaata at Ghazipur.
A thick blanket of smoke covered the section of the dumping yard where the fire broke out.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to submit a report on the incident within 24 hours.
Fires at the Ghazipur landfill are known to worsen pollution levels in the area.
Such incidents had been reported in the past too, indicating "a lack of measures taken and vigilance observed by the EDMC to prevent such episodes", an official said.
