Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh: There was absolute chaos outside a bank in western Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district this morning, which was in short supply of cash.
Videos shot by villagers who had queued up to withdraw money at a branch of the Punjab National Bank, about 70 kilometres from the Bulandshahr town, show a few women arguing with and then assaulting a head constable Jasveer Singh, who had allegedly misbehaved with the crowd.
Other policemen and bank officials can be seen trying to calm things down, but things go out of hand and a woman can be seen slapping the head constable, who slaps her right back.
The constable later also fired in the air with his rifle. This, however, did not deter those assaulting him, especially a few women who can be seen in the mobile video raining slippers on him. The cop then took aim at the crowd with his rifle, but did not fire, instead hitting the woman and others with the gun, the video shows.
Police reinforcements have rushed to the spot. The cop in question has been taken away from the bank and is being questioned.
The administration says it is trying to calm things down by talking to the villagers. Meanwhile, Mr Singh, the head constable has been suspended.
