India Bans Import Of Dogs For Commercial Purposes

New Delhi: India has banned the import of dogs for breeding or any other commercial activities, a government notification said in New Delhi.

However, import of dogs is allowed for "pet dog with valid pet book and relevant records or documents in the name of importer", the commerce ministry notification said.

It said, dogs imported by the research and development organisations for conducting research with the recommendation of Committee for the Purpose of Control And Supervision of Experiments on Animals will also be allowed.

Import of dogs for internal security by the defence and police forces will be allowed, it said.
