New Delhi:
A crucial meeting of the government's highest China policy group has been put off to bring down the hype on incursions.
National Security Advisor MK Narayanan had convened a meeting of the country's top policy makers on China to formulate a response to Beijing's increasing aggressiveness, but the decision to defer the meet is perhaps an indication of the government's stand that diplomacy is more important in dealing with such matters. The move may help ease the ongoing tension between the two neighbouring countries.
New Delhi may publically play down the China challenge, but the government is worried about the heightened tension along the Line of Actual Control after repeated Chinese incursions.
National Security Advisor MK Narayanan will preside over the meeting to be attended by the Cabinet, defence, foreign and home secretaries.
The RAW and the Intelligence Bureau chiefs will also be there and there will be the representatives of three armed forces and the Director General of ITBP.
The meeting will take stock of the plans to upgrade infrastructure in border areas and construction of 6000 km of roads in the areas along the Chinese border in states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Ladakh in J&K.
A comprehensive response to recent Chinese incursions is expected.
Indian Army's Operation Alert:
The Indian Army has mobilised its troops to forwards posts in Jammu and Kashmir and along the northeastern border with China in an exercise named Operation Alert, a defence official said on Wednesday.
The Army describes Operation Alert as an annual exercise conducted during this time of the year to maintain forward posts.
About 50 per cent troops on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) have been mobilised and this would last for nearly a month. The mobilisation of Indian troops has come close on the heels of heightened tension with Chinese following incursions.
