India, China shake hands over climate change

New Delhi: India and China may disagree on many things, but the two countries have come together on climate change.

Some critics say siding with the world's biggest polluter could weakenIndia's position, but others argue coming together is the best way ofensuring an equitable deal - ahead of the UN climate change summit inCopenhagen this December.

Leading climate negotiations for thedeveloping world, India and China signed an important pact onWednesday, to set up a joint workgroup on climate change. "Bothcountries are collaborating to ensure a fair and equitable outcome inCopenhagen," said Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh.

The pactis crucial, as it comes at a time when there have been reports that thetwo sides are drifting apart on the climate change issue. Also, therehave been attempts by developed nations to play India and China againsteach other.

"Since different countries are in differentdevelopment stages and face different problems, we need variedsolutions and that is why we seek dialogue among us," explained ChineseEnvironment Minister Xie Zhenhua.

But the big question is, will this newfound camaraderie hold up at the negotiating table in December?
