New Delhi:
India today criticised the escalation of violence by Israel in the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate halt to the increase in hostilities in the region.
"We did say categorically that the disproportionate use of force is unacceptable. It's a very sad and tragic escalation of violence that cost the loss of some innocent lives, particularly women and children," External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said.
Mr Khurshid was asked about New Delhi's view on the conflict while he was reacting to the execution of 26/11 convict Ajmal Kasab this morning. He reaffirmed India's commitment to an independent state of Palestine.
Mr Khurshid said India wants peace to be restored immediately in the Gaza Strip and supports whatever efforts are being made to de-escalate the violence.
He said Palestine deserves an independent sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital and India was firm on that position. But at the same time, it was important right now for peace to return in the region.
