New Delhi:

India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,29,03,289 with the country reporting 45,352 new infections today. With 366 virus-related deaths, the total fatality climbed to 4,39,895, according to the data updated at 8 am.

The active cases increased to 3,99,778 comprising 1.22 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.45 per cent, the ministry said. An increase of 10,195 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

As many as 16,66,334 tests were conducted on Thursday taking the total cumulative tests conducted so far for detection of COVID-19 in the country to 52,65,35,068.

A negative RT-PCR result not older than 72 hours has been made mandatory for passengers travelling to India from seven more countries, including, China and South Africa. The move comes after the discovery of a new Covid variant - C.1.2 - which could be more infectious and has shown signs of evading protection provided by vaccines.

While earlier this rule was only applicable for arrivals from the UK, Europe and Middle East, seven more countries - South Africa, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe - have been added to the list today, according to a latest guideline by Ministry of Health.

The new variant was first detected in South Africa in May. It has since been found in China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, England, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.

Why Has WHO Designated 'Mu' A Variant Of Concern? Find Out All About It
Following the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, the world paid attention to a new variant of the coronavirus. Named Delta, it was blamed for the rapid surge in cases in April-May this year. Now, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said it was monitoring the spread of another variant of interest - Mu. It was first identified in Colombia in January and has since infected people in South America and Europe. Mu's possible resistance to vaccines is what makes it risky for the global population. Now, the WHO has said that more research was needed to better understand its behaviour.

With the latest addition, there are five variants of interest for the WHO - Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, and Mu.

Mutations in viruses are not new. All viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, undergo change over time. Most of these changes are inconsequential, but some can alter properties to make these viruses more virulent or escape the treatment or vaccines.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister urges people to follow COVID-19 norms; not make govt shut everything during third wave
Expressing concerns over people letting their guard down against COVID-19 in rural areas, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday urged citizens not to put the state government in a position where it has to shut everything in the event of a third wave of the pandemic.

Speaking to reporters in Pune, Mr Pawar said the Centre has already cautioned all the states, citing that Kerala and Maharashtra have been reporting the highest number of cases.

"Unfortunately, in rural areas, some people are becoming lax. They are not scared of coronavirus. They don't use masks, don't follow physical distancing, and they have assumed that everything (COVID-19 pandemic) is over. This has led to rise in infections," Mr Pawar said.

How Tamil Nadu Is Vaccinating Its Young Population
Tamil Nadu is ramping up its inoculation programme with a different approach: vaccination centres in colleges. With institutions reopening after months, Tamil Nadu faces the enormous challenge of vaccinating its young population. Although, the state's daily Covid-19 tally has been on the decline with 1,562 cases and 20 related deaths reported yesterday, vaccine hesitancy had initially slowed down the state's inoculation programme.

Now, the state government is expanding vaccine coverage, especially among the young population, through inoculation drives on college campuses.

At Chennai's 70-year-old New College, Mohamed Suhail, a final year B Com student who got his first vaccine dose during the college campus drive said that the state government's decision of making vaccination mandatory for attending classes in college, helped in shedding his fears with respect to the jab.

Saudi Arabia Now Has The World's Toughest Vaccine Rules
A security guard stands at the entrance to every mall in Saudi Arabia's capital, ready for a pandemic routine shoppers are getting used to: proving their vaccination status on a government phone app that tracks their location at all times.

A dystopia for opponents of vaccine requirements from the United States to France is already a reality in Saudi Arabia, which enacted what amount to some of the strictest immunization rules in the world on August 1.

As the highly-contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 sends other countries back into lockdown, officials in the world's largest crude exporter are counting on a strategy that makes vaccination all-but mandatory to keep their economy open. That's made the nation of 35 million a test case in what happens when people who are reluctant to get inoculated are pushed into a corner.
