In a significant breakthrough, India and Pakistan today discussed ways to resume the stalled dialogue process, sources have told NDTV. Officials say the idea is to move ahead step by step without giving any time frame.
That was the key takeaway in talks between the two foreign secretaries who met in Islamabad today, seven months after their talks in Delhi were abruptly cancelled.
Sources have told NDTV Indian officials are happy with the tone and tenor of the discussions which have been described as positive.
In a statement, India's foreign secretary S Jaishankar said " We engaged on each other's concerns and interests in an open manner. We agreed to work together to find common ground and narrow differences."
Mr Jaishankar added " We agreed that ensuring peace and tranquility on the border was vital.Our talks were held in a constructive and positive atmosphere."
Mr Jaishankar is in Islamabad as part of a SAARC Yatra but the meeting with his counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry has provided an opportunity to both sides to look at the possibility of restarting the dialogue.
Pakistan's Foreign Office issued a statement saying all contentious issues including Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek were discussed.
