India reels under heat wave as monsoon remains stagnant

New Delhi: The heat is back. And for those reeling under high temperatures, there is more bad news - in the last six days, the monsoon has not shown any progress.

The northern limit of the monsoon remains stagnant over Goa, Karnataka and the areas of the north east. Normally, by June 10, monsoon crosses areas of Maharashtra, Central India and parts of Odisha but till today, only pre-monsoon showers are reported from these areas.

The deficit has gone up in the southern peninsula; it stands at about 60 per cent.

The cloud cover seems to be concentrated towards the west and the east coast and showers are expected over these areas in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, large parts of India are witnessing high temperatures. Maximum temperatures continue to be 4-5 degrees above normal in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of Odisha. In Lucknow, the maximum temperature is 44 degrees Celsius which is four degrees above normal. Delhi is hotting up again in the last 24 hours. The maximum temperature in the national capital is 41 degrees Celsius which is expected to rise further. Meanwhile, Allahabad continues to be very, very hot at 46 degrees Celsius - six degrees above normal.
