India to raise spying on its embassy with US, says reports are 'disconcerting'
New Delhi: India will raise with Washington reports that the United States "intrusively monitored" the Indian embassy there, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Guardian newspaper reported  on Sunday that the United States spied on 38 diplomatic missions, including allies in Europe, India, Japan and others.

"We have seen and studied media reports of our embassy in Washington being among a list of diplomatic missions which were intrusively monitored by U.S. agencies," said Syed Akbaruddin, spokesman for the foreign ministry.

"Obviously, we are concerned at such disconcerting reports and we will certainly raise with U.S. authorities these serious allegations," he told reporters.

Yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid offered a placid reaction to the vast Internet and phone surveillance programme of the US revealed by intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, who  was a contractor with the National Security Agency and is now a fugitive.  Mr Snowden, 30, has been denied asylum by India.

"This is not scrutiny and access to actual messages. It is only computer analysis of patterns of calls and emails that are being sent... it is not actually snooping on the content of anyone's messages or conversations," Mr Khurshid said in Brunei on Tuesday.

Mr Akbaruddin said today, "Our view remains that we were concerned at these reports of snooping and that these would be taken up." He said that Mr Khurshid was "only elaborating on his discussions with Mr Kerry." He added, "We will raise the issue at the cyber security dialogue which is the correct forum for this."
