Washington: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington this month, India and the US have agreed to work together to achieve "concrete results" to deepen their close collaboration on several issues, including the fight against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) blamed for many terror attacks in India.

This was decided during Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar's meeting with US National Security Adviser Susan Rice and other top Obama administration officials.

"The visit was aimed at reviewing the India-US bilateral relations and preparing for India's participation at the forthcoming Nuclear Security Summit later this month," said Sridharan Madhusudhanan, spokesman of the Indian Embassy in Washington.

The meetings focussed on consolidating bilateral ties and enhancing convergence on regional and global issues, he said.

"In this context, both sides agreed to work for achieving concrete results in key areas of bilateral cooperation including defense, trade & investment and civil nuclear energy. The Foreign Secretary also previewed with the US interlocutors the 4th Nuclear Security Summit and India's participation therein," Mr Madhusudhanan said.

Earlier, a White House official said: "Rice and Jaishankar affirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation on climate change, trade and defence, and noted preparations for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit.

"They also discussed US-India collaboration against Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and other terrorist threats," Ned Price, spokesman of National Security Council, White House, said in a statement yesterday.

"Building on their leaders' commitment to make the US-India partnership a defining relationship for the 21st century, they agreed to deepen their already close collaboration on these issues."

LeT was behind several terror attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attack. India has blamed the JeM for the January 2 terror attack on Pathankot air base.

In the US Congress, Mr Jaishankar had meetings with Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Corker, Chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee Senator John McCain and Chairman of Senate Intelligence Committee Senator Richard Burr to exchange views on bilateral, regional and international issues.

Yesterday, he met officials at the State Department, Department of Commerce and US Trade Representatives.

PM Modi will visit Washington on March 31 to attend the Nuclear Security Summit to be hosted by US President Barack Obama.

Mr Jaishankar was in Washington on a four-day visit beginning Sunday.
