India waits for action on the dying cop
New Delhi: Images of Sub Inspector R Vetrivel bleeding to death in Tamil Nadu by the side of the road even as the state's Health and Sports ministers and officials looked on, outraged India.

But 10 days on, not even a probe has been ordered.

The state government has refused to comment; they are not even finding it necessary to comment on its ministers' inaction. But others are not staying silent.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) coming up on Friday has asked for criminal action against those who stood watching when Vetrivel begged for help.

Filed by Manikandan Vathan, it seeks to file criminal charges against the ministers, bureaucrats and the cameraperson who shot the footage.

So far there's little word on what action if any will be taken.

"The investigation is on and is currently in its early stages. The Investigation Officer and the SP will decide," says Latika Saran, DGP Tamil Nadu.

The inaction has outraged many. And while the authorities dither, help has been pouring in for the family. The Tamil Nadu Police has decided to contribute a day's salary.

For the moment though it's of little consolation to Vetrival's family, still waiting for action against the callous ministers.
