Indian-American woman kills daughter in murder-suicide bid

Washington: A distraught Indian-American woman has shot dead her teenage daughter, fearing there would be no one to care for her after she commits suicide, Florida police said today.

Sujatha Guduru, 44, is under arrest after she admitted to detectives that she killed her 17-year-old Chetana Guduru twice before turning the gun on herself.

"She admitted to them that she intended to commit suicide and that she did shoot her daughter as well," Lt Mike Beavers was quoted as saying by myfoxorlando.com.

Police believed that Sujatha had been planning the murder-suicide for weeks. She recently bought a .38 caliber revolver, wrote a will and detailed her plans in an email to her brother.

He didn't see it until it was too late, and found the two of them inside their Farmingham Court home in Florida.

Chetana died on Monday.

Police are still looking for answers as to why Sujatha allegedly killed her daughter and then turned the gun on herself.

"She gave statements on why she decided to shoot her daughter but we're still not very clear on why she decided to do this in the first place."

Police said Sujatha will survive, and she's being guarded by Orange County corrections officers while she recovers at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Once she is medically cleared, she'll be taken to the Orange County jail on first degree murder charges and then extradited to Seminole county.
