Indian Navy, Army on Standby as Mumbai Battered by Heavy Rains

Rains brought life to a standstill in Mumbai

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Indian Navy, Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been put on standby after heavy rains in Mumbai brought life to a standstill. Sea King helicopters too remain on standby at the naval base in Colaba. Schools have been advised to stay shut by the municipal corporation.

The Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Ajoy Mehta said, "The city has experienced unprecedented rainfall in the last 24 hours, more than that the city usually receives in 10 days. Mumbai witnessed 283 mm of rain in 24 hours".

Heavy rains have been predicted for tomorrow by the meteorological department, citizens have been advised to stay indoors, stay away from beaches and Marine Drive wall area.

An alert for high tide at 2:30 am tonight has been issued by the BMC; when the water level is likely to be over 3 metres. High tide is expected again at 3:10 pm tomorrow afternoon, water levels could be over 4 metres then.

Mr Mehta said, "The major challenge will be after 2:30 PM tomorrow as the high tide will set in. And at that time, it will also be raining. So, there is a possibility of more water-logging in low-lying spots".

262 pumps have been pressed into service to take out water from the streets by the municipal corporation, 140 are working continuously.

The main areas that remain waterlogged are Hindmata, Dadar, Kurla and Matunga.
