A team of 11 mountaineers from West Bengal had conquered the Everest but four of them were untraceable yesterday.
A mountaineer from West Bengal, Subhash Pal, has died during an expedition to Mount Everest. Two other mountaineers - Goutam Ghosh and Paresh Nath - are still untraceable.
A team of 11 mountaineers from West Bengal had conquered the Everest but four of them were untraceable yesterday. Later they were traced according to a local tour operator. One of them, Sunita Hazra, has been admitted to a hospital in Kathmandu after being evacuated by helicopter from Camp 2.
Mr Pal, 38, is a resident of Bankura in West Bengal and comes from a very humble background. His father retired as Group D staff and he used to drive a Matador to earn a living. The expenses of the expedition were funded by various charitable organizations and a loan on his father's pension. The family also mortgaged land so that Mr Pal could pursue his passion of mountaineering.
Mr Pal left home on April 7 to join the team of mountaineers in an attempt to scale the peak of Mount Everest. Yesterday, Subhash Pal's father Rudra Das Pal told NDTV, "We are worried about what has happened to him and waiting to see him. No one is in a mood to eat till we see him. Since we don't know what is happening we cannot eat also." Today the family was completely inconsolable after his death was confirmed.
Earlier this week, mountaineer Rajib Bhattacharya had died after scaling the peak of Mount Dhaulagiri. His body is yet to be brought back. Bad weather is hampering operations.
Seven Summit Treks Pvt Ltd, the company that was operating the trip, said, "A rescue team is at the base camp and they have started for the site where he died. Maybe they will be able to retrieve the dead body by day after tomorrow and bring it down to the base camp from where it will flown by helicopter to Kathmandu."
