Mumbai:
The Indian Navy came to the rescue of a cargo ship that had been attacked by pirates while on its way to Singapore.
On Thursday, the ship's crew - from Ukraine and the Philippines - had locked themselves in the ship's engine room and emailed their agents in Dubai to inform them of the crisis. The ship was 450 nautical miles West of Mumbai.
Dubai then asked the Indian Navy for assistance. The navy sent one of its Missile Corvettes, INS Veer, to intercept the distressed vessel and also sent a team of marine commandos to help out.
On Friday morning, the naval forces arrived at the scene of the crisis and got to work. Commandos slithered down ropes from a helicopter and rescued the crew, which was hiding in locked compartments.
No pirates were found on board.
