In May last year, the death of Sarabjit Singh in a jail in Lahore escalated tension between India and Pakistan. The Indian had been beaten to death by fellow inmates.
He had been arrested in 1991 and given the death sentence for spying and carrying out four bomb blasts that killed 14 people. His family maintained that he was an innocent farmer who was arrested after drunkenly wandering over the border.
The next day, a 52-year-old Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah Ranjay, was attacked by another inmate in a Jammu jail; he died due to multiple organ failure.
