Indian Railways Announces AC Coach For DEMU Train

The Railway Ministry announced that soon DEMU trains will be rolled out for passenger services.

New Delhi: Indian Railways has developed its first air-conditioned coach for its diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains, an official statement said on Thursday.

"The first ever AC coach has been manufactured at Indian Railways' Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF)," a press statement said.

"Existing 8-coach DEMU train will have two such newly developed AC coaches."

The Railway Ministry announced that soon such DEMU trains will be rolled out for passenger services.

It added that the Integral Coach Factory plans to roll out four DEMU train sets, each provided with two AC coaches.

The AC coaches are provided with four comfortable reclining cushioned chairs with total capacity to seat 73 passengers.

The interior furnishing of these AC coaches is similar to that of intercity AC express train coaches, it added.

All AC coaches are equipped with environment friendly bio-toilets.

Till now the existing DEMU trains consisted only of non-air conditioned coaches.

The Indian Railways presently runs three types of DEMU trains -- 6-coach with 700 (horsepower) hp, 8-coach with 1,400 hp and 10-coach with 1,600 hp.
