Manchester, United Kingdom: British police said on Wednesday they believe the death of an Indian student whose body was found in a canal was an accident.
Souvik Pal, an 18-year-old student at Manchester Metropolitan University in northwest England, had been missing since New Year's Eve after celebrating with friends at a nightclub in the city.
His body was found on Tuesday in a canal near the Old Trafford football stadium, the home of Manchester United, where he had worked part-time selling drinks and snacks.
Police divers had been searching the city's extensive network of canals since Pal disappeared.
Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin of Greater Manchester Police said: "We do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Souvik's death and a file will be submitted to the coroner in due course."
A post-mortem has failed to produce a conclusive result and further toxicology tests will be carried out to establish the cause of death.
Pal's father Santanu had flown from the family's home city of Bangalore in southern India to help with the police search.
The teenager's friends had taken part in a silent walk from the stadium earlier this month ahead of United's match with Liverpool and details about him were flashed on the pitch-side digital advertising boards.
