Indian with 4-month sentence spends years in jail

Kuala Lumpur: An Indian national, who was sentenced to four-months of imprisonment for not possessing valid travel documents in Malaysia, has been languishing in a prison for over three years now, with his plea for release caught in procedural delays.

37-year-old S Nallusamy's plight came to light when a social worker named S Kamalanathan was contacted by his family in Tiruchy, the local daily Tamil Nesan reported.

Kamalanathan said he was told by immigration officers that they had submitted documents to the Indian High Commission to enable Nallusamy to be repatriated back to India after completing his sentence.

However, they had not received any reply.

Nallusamy is so frustrated with his predicament that he asked a social worker who visited him at the Lenggeng detention centre to bring poison for him to end his life, the paper said.

Nallusamy was detained by Immigration officials in 2007 for not having travel documents after entering Malaysia in 2002.
