For the second consecutive day India has reported more coronavirus recoveries than new infections, shows the Health Ministry data from this morning according to which 94,612 people have been cured in the last 24 hours. With more than 43 lakh patients having recovered from COVID-19 - pushing the recovery rate to 79.67 per cent - India remains the country with highest coronavirus recoveries in the world, followed by US where 41 lakh people have recovered.
According to the Health Ministry data, India's positivity rate is 7.67 per cent, and its fatality rate is 1.60 per cent.
India also conducted a record 12 lakh tests (12,06,806) in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry said. The country has doubled its testing in the past month to more than 6.36 crore tests.
However, India has been reporting more than 90,000 cases per day for the past week and has added almost 17 lakh cases in September alone - 17,79,374. Around 22,283 of the total deaths, about a fourth of all deaths till now, have been reported in September.
In view of a surge in Covid cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss the coronavirus situation with the chief ministers of seven states badly hit by the pandemic - including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh which account for 60 per cent of all cases in the country - on September 23 via video conferencing.
With a tally of over 11.88 lakh, Maharashtra has the highest number of overall coronavirus cases till now. Almost 37 per cent of all deaths reported so far in the country are from the western state. Mumbai has extended a ban on large gatherings till September 30.
Delhi recorded 4,071 fresh instances of COVID-19 infections in a day taking the tally of cases in the city-state to over 2.42 lakh on Saturday. Thirty-eight new fatalities pushed the death count to 4,945. All schools in the national capital will continue to remain closed till October 5.
A day after Chhattisgarh recorded its highest single-day spike since the COVID-19 outbreak began, the state declared Raipur district "a containment zone", and announced a hard lockdown between September 21-28 with no exemptions even for grocery shops. Petrol pumps will provide fuel only to government vehicles, private vehicles engaged in medical emergency and ambulances.
India is the second worst-hit country by the pandemic and accounts for almost 17 per cent of all cases in the world.
Globally, more than 30.6 million people have contracted the coronavirus since its outbreak in China's Wuhan last year.
