New Delhi:
He came to AIIMS a little bundle wrapped in a towel and with his heart protruding out of his chest. All of India prayed that the miracle baby would survive beating all odds. Surgeons put his heart into his chest, but the infant died in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The 22-day-old baby suffered from a very rare congenital anomaly called Ectopia Cordis -- a birth defect where the heart is abnormally located. It protrudes outside the chest through a split sternum.
Born on August 26, the newborn was brought to the hospital by his father, Chandar Majhi, from Bihar, wrapped in a towel and with his heart protruding from the chest.
"He was brought to the hospital on the afternoon of August 28. He had developed infection by then as he was exposed to outside elements during his night-long train journey," the doctor said.
On September 3 surgeons had successfully put his protruding heart inside and he was shifted to the ICU. His condition was stable but critical.
But the baby developed pneumonia and suffered multiple organ failure, a doctor at AIIMS said.
According to paediatric surgeons at the hospital, no one with such a condition has survived for as many days as the miracle baby did.
