Indore tops India's crime chart

Indore: Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital Indore has topped the crime record in the country in 2008 followed by Bhopal and Jaipur.

Crime rate of Indore was 941.4, which is the highest in the country, according to National Crime Record Bureau's (NCRB) report - "Crime in India 2008".

Bhopal followed with crime rate of 791.4 in the same year as per the report.

The report was based on cases registered under various sections of Indian Penal Code.

The actual census population of mega cities for the year 2001 has been used for calculating crime rates like previous years in the absence of current mid-year population estimates of these cities.

Jaipur stood third with crime rate of 663 followed by Kochi (587.2) and Rajkot (551.4) per cent. The crime rate in Delhi was 348.5 in 2008.

The Madhya Pradesh government introduced Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) system in Indore and Bhopal last year to check increasing crimes in both the cities.

"Most of the major cities, having more than 10 lakh population, in the country are facing rise in criminal cases due to social and economic reasons. In 2001, the number of such cities was 35," NCRB's annual report said.

A total of 20,93,379 criminal cases came to light throughout the country in 2008 and out of them 2,47,153 cognisable offences were registered in big cities.
