Kolkata: Arrested on charges of murdering a 24-year-old named Sheena Bora, Sanjeev Khanna, a businessman from Kolkata, has said that he was in Mumbai on April 24, 2012, when Ms Bora, the daughter of his ex-wife, Indrani Mukerjea, was last seen alive.
Mr Khanna, who was arrested last night, was brought to a Kolkata court today where his lawyer said that on April 24, 2012, he had travelled to Mumbai for business and to meet with the daughter he shares with Ms Mukerjea. The lawyer says Ms Mukerjea did not permit that meeting and that Mr Khanna is innocent of any wrongdoing.
Mr Khanna was Ms Mukerjea's second husband. Her daughter from an earlier relationship, Sheena Bora, was strangled and set on fire on the outskirts of Mumbai three years ago, the police has said, by Ms Mukerjee, her driver and Mr Khanna.
All her life, Ms Mukerjea presented Ms Bora as her sister. The murder has exposed that the young woman was actually her daughter, a relationship that Ms Mukerjea's husband, Peter Mukerjea, says he was unaware of.
After Ms Bora disappeared, her mother said she had moved to the US to study. The police last week arrested Ms Mukerjea's driver in connection with another criminal case. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing Ms Bora on the order of Ms Mukerjea.
