Informers of I-T dept to go on hunger strike

Mumbai: Politicians or social workers going on hunger strike to press for their demands is a common feature but for the first time informers of income tax have decided to follow suit to claim Rs 127 crore reward money which they say has not been paid to them since last 20 years.

A group of five informers would go on hunger strike at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Monday to register their protest against non-payment of reward money due to them for helping the Income Tax Department collect Rs 1270 crore income tax in the last two decades.

"This is for the first time that informers are coming out in the open to protest against non-payment of reward money," said Devendra Doctor, an informer.

According to Doctor, the informers are entitled to ten per cent of the tax recovered on the basis of information. But the Income Tax authorities give an adhoc amount of Rs 1 lakh every time taxes are recovered on the basis of information given by an informer. The balance is never paid, he alleged.

There are at least 15 informers but only five of them have come forward to lodge protest against non-payment of reward amount, Doctor said.

The informers have also filed a petition in the Bombay High Court making this grievance. The judges have given some interim direction and the matter is slated to be heard on July 2 by a division bench, he added.
