Inmates at a jail in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district have gone on the rampage over the alleged suicide of a prisoner due to harassment.
Angry inmates armed with sticks and stones have been protesting in the jail, some even clashing with the police since Wednesday night.
Several inmates escaped their prison cells and climbed the roof of the jail as the police tried to control the chaos.
The ruckus started after 51-year-old undertrial Kamlesh allegedly committed suicide due to harassment by the jail superintendent. The inmates are demanding that the superintendent be sacked and arrested for abetting the suicide.
There is heavy deployment of personnel in and outside the jail and police forces have also been brought in from neighbouring districts of Kannauj, which is the Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav.
The district administration has been trying to restore order and broker peace, but the inmates have refused to back off.
