INS Kochi launched, Navy chief wants more

Mumbai:

Naval Chief AdmiralNirmal Kumar Verma has called for a serious relook at the Indian Navy's inefficiencies and conceptualisation of an indigenous warship building system.

Verma made the statement on Friday, at the launch of warship INS Kochi, a Delhi-classdestroyer, at the Mazgaon dock in south Mumbai. "Fluctuating funding in the past has compelled the Navy to resort tobuilding warships abroad. But now we urgently need to emulateworldwide trends in warship building (in the country)," he said.

The 6,500-tonne INSKochi, launched by Verma's wife Madulika, is the second warship in 'Project15-A', under which three guided-missile destroyers with stealth and multi-rolefeatures will be built.

INS Kochi hasadvanced stealth features that make it less vulnerable to detection by enemyradar. Its weapons system include the nuclear capable supersonic BrahMossurface-to-surface

missile.
