Inspired by Amsterdam's red light district, the Manganiyar seduction

Jaisalmer: Thirty-seven folk musicians from Jaisalmer & Jodhpur, dressed in traditional turbans and robes kneel in red cubicles that are lit-up and stacked four tiers high.

This is the spectacle named the Manganiyar Seduction. The set inspired by Amsterdam's red light district weighs nearly four tons and takes a crew of eight workers six hours to assemble.

The Manganiyars have been performing for generations. Their folk songs describe the life of the common people and their music borders on the classical with a touch of Sufism.

"My great-grandfather, my grandfather, all have been associated with music. A child born in our family cries in rhythm," says Talab Khan, singer.

But blending the traditional folk music with Amsterdam's neon-lit red light district might seem unusual.

Director Roysten Abel says, "For me, another one of the most theatrical experiences was the red light district of Amsterdam which was, you know, extremely theatrical in spite of the heavy seduction of the body happening. The only difference is that over there it was the seduction of the body and here it is the seduction of the soul. So, can we marry the two?"

This spectacle has entertained international audiences and has played in more than 50 countries, always attracting a standing ovation from the audience.
