Kathmandu:
Representatives from 16 countries, including India, today started deliberations on the impact of climate change-induced disasters in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region and ways of mitigating them.
The three-day international conference titled 'Cryosphere of the Hindu Kush Himalaya: State of the Knowledge' and the Hindu Kush Himalayan Cryosphere Data Sharing workshop began here today.
Addressing the conference, Director General at International Centre for Integrated mountain Development (ICIMOD), David Molden, said that the conference would help in formulating policies to tackle the effects of climate change in the mountain regions through the sharing of knowledge and information.
Director at the US Embassy in Kathmandu, Ari Nathan, stressed on the need to lower the impacts of climate change upon lives in the mountain region by addressing the issues at the policy level.
Experts who attended the function stressed on the need for providing special attention to the scientific data and information analysis about the changes that are likely to take place in the mountain region would help cope with the impending risks.
Some 140 participants from 16 countries including Nepal, India, Bangladesh and China are attending the workshop and conference.
