IOC serves ultimatum on Suresh Kalmadi

There seems to be no respite for Commonwealth boss Suresh Kalmadi. After the CBI raided his houses and offices in 3 cities, Kalmadi now faces the heat from the Internatinal Olympic committee.

NDTV has exclusive access to letters written by the International Olympic Committee asking Kalmadi to make changes in the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association.

If he fails to comply his post as the sports body's President could be in jeopardy.

This letter of warning from the International Olympic Committee was expected, considering the president of the Indian Olympic Association had been turning a blind eye to IOC's repeated requests for making changes to the National Olympic Committee's constitution.

Here's what the International Olympic committee is asking for:

  • 34 sports federations should have voting rights for IOA elections

  • Out of the 34 federations that do vote, only their respective presidents will be allowed to vote and not their secretaries and treasurers, as was the case earlier. So basically 1 federation 1 vote

It isn't hard to understand why Mr Kalmadi is reluctant to bring about these changes. After all he has successfully managed to be at the helm of the Indian Olympic Association for 14 long years by garnering votes from federations such as Atya Patya, Cycle Polo and Tug of War

For the moment though it's doesn't seem like he'll win this war, with the International Olympic Committe making it clear that if he fails to abide by their new rules, he could get the boot as early as January 2011.
