IPL spot-fixing, betting : cricketers, bookies walk out of jail

After Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of BCCI chief N Srinivasan was granted bail, 20 others, including cricketers Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan were also granted bail by a Delhi court yesterday.

After spending 26 days behind bars in IPL spot-fixing case, cricketer Sreesanth was released from Tihar Jail tonight along with Ankeet Chavan and 17 others.

Sreesanth, who was arrested along with Chavan and another player Ajit Chandila on May 16 from Mumbai by Delhi Police, did not speak to waiting media outside Tihar Jail.

Speaking to NDTV earlier today Sreesanth's brother said they are planning to go to the Vaishno Devi and Sabrimala temples once Sreesanth got out of jail.

Savitri Devi, mother of pacer S Sreesanth, who was granted bail by a Delhi court in the IPL spot fixing case, said she was happy and relieved with the court verdict.

The family was grateful to all the fans of the cricketer for their support and prayers, Savitri Devi told reporters in Kerala.

"I am happy he has got bail," she said.

The 19 people given bail will walk out today but will they will have to surrender their passports and they cannot travel abroad, but they are free to travel within the country, the court held.

On Monday, a Delhi court granted bail to Test cricketer S Sreesanth and 18 other people arrested on allegations of betting and spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It also rejected the Delhi Police plea seeking framing of charges under the stringent MCOCA against them.

MS Dhoni, the Captain of the Indian cricket team, should be given a notice for conflict of interest, Board of Control for Cricket in India or BCCI's new Treasurer Ravi Sawant told NDTV, adding Dhoni should disassociate himself from player management firm Rhiti Sports Management.

Dhoni had owned 15 per cent stake in the sports management firm which manages some players in the Indian cricket squad.

Raj Kundra was questioned in connection with the betting and spot-fixing scandal that has engulfed Indian cricket. Three players from the Royals, including Sreesanth, are in custody after being accused of deliberately bowling badly in exchange for pay-offs from bookmakers during the IPL.

The provisions under MCOCA will make it more difficult for Rajasthan Royals player S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila and alleged bookies to get bail.
