New Delhi:
Investigators got tip off in the middle of March about bookies' plan to indulge in spot-fixing in this IPL season and kept them under surveillance during which they intercepted calls from a Dubai number.
Police said the conversations between the bookies led them to the three Rajasthan Royal players - Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan.
A senior police official said they had intercepted a call from a Dubai number but were not sure if the person was in Dubai when the call was made. "He can use a Dubai number and call from anywhere," he said.
Sreeshant was arrested from Carter Road in Mumbai in the early hours of today while Chandila was arrested from the Intercontinental Hotel. Chavan was picked up from Hotel Trident.
"The players were staying in Hotel Intercontinental and Trident.
Interestingly, two bookies Amit Kumar and Manan were arrested from Room 336 of the Intercontinental Hotel. It means that the bookies were staying in the same hotel where the players were staying," the official said.
Alleged bookies Chandresh Patel of Andheri East, Amit Kumar of Ahmedabad, Manan of Ahmedabad and Jiju Janardhan of Kannur were arrested from Mumbai.
Bookies Deepak Kumar of Patiala and Rakesh of Rohini were arrested in Delhi. The names of a few others arrested are withheld in the interest of further investigations, police said.
"In all, 14-persons have been arrested, including four who were working in the bookie exchange of one of the bookies. Preliminary searches were carried out in Mumbai, Delhi and Gurgaon.
"Among the items found during the search are 51 mobile phones, five laptops, one recording machine etc. which have been seized. More arrests of bookies are likely," a police statement said.
