Is Delhi ready for Commonwealth Games?

New Delhi: It's just one year to go for the Commonwealth Games in the capital, but most sports venues are lagging behind.

Workers should have been putting up final touches on the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium -- the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies. But instead, the bulk of construction work is far from over and it should have been ready by December.

Recently, NDTV broke the story of how the government auditor had warned in July that the stadium and 13 other venues faced a high risk of not being completed in time.

Work picked up, but even two months later just 64 per cent work has been completed.

The Karni Singh Shooting Range is just half done. The Organising Committee says the work will be completed by December this year. But the Shooting World Cup, which was to be held in March has been cancelled.

While the organisers claim it is for other reasons privately many are nervous that the venue won't be ready in time.

Another bigger cause of worry is the SPM swimming pool, which should have been completed by now. But it is not even half way there.

Though one Games official said that the great Indian jugaad will ensure that the stadiums are complete before the Commonwealth Games, but they should have been ready now to allow for test games.

Delegates from Commonwealth nations are expected in the capital in a week's time. They will review the progress, but Games' President Mike Fennell will also meet the Prime Minister in the hope to speed things up.
