Ahmedabad:
Two pen drives with conversations between BJP leader Amit Shah and senior police officers - in which they allegedly discuss the investigations into the fake encounter killing of college student Ishrat Jahan -have been submitted by the CBI to the Gujarat High Court.
Mr Shah was Home Minister of Gujarat in 2004, when Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old from Mumbai, was killed with three men on the outskirts of Ahmedabad by senior officers of the city's crime branch. The police said it had been told by intelligence officials that the group planned to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Nine years after the shooting, the CBI submitted its first chargesheet documenting the charges and evidence against the accused earlier this month. The agency did not comment on whether Ishrat and the others were terrorists but was categorical that the encounter was staged and "in cold blood."
The CBI has also not commented yet on whether Mr Modi or Mr Shah knew in advance about the police's plans to eliminate the group.
The conversations that are on the pen drives were allegedly sourced from police officer GL Singhal, who is one of 7 police officers charged with murder and destruction of evidence.
The CBI says that Mr Singhal "has informed that these files contain telephonic conversation between him and the then MoS Home Amit Shah in the month of August and September 2009 relating to misuse of the police for extra-legal purposes in miscarriage of justice."
The investigating agency alleges that another conversation between ministers, bureaucrats and police officers in November 2011 focused on how to derail the inquiry into Ishrat's killing.
