Ahmedabad: A special CBI court today rejected the bail application of suspended Indian Police Services officer N K Amin in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Amin's lawyer argued that since the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not file its chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days, Mr Amin is entitled to bail.

The court maintained that the CBI chargesheet was filed on time. The investigating agency, in its first chargesheet filed last week, said the killing was a joint operation between the Gujarat Police and the state's Intelligence Bureau.

The CBI had arrested Amin on April 4 this year after his release on bail in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case.

Of the five policemen that the CBI says shot at Ishrat and the others - N K Amin, J G Parmar, Tarun Barot, Mohan Kalasawa and Anaju Jiman Choudhary - Kalasawa has since died. Of those who fired, only Amin remains in jail while others got bail.

Mr Amin and Mr Barot have also been accused by the CBI of abducting Ishrat Jahan, who was on her way to Ahmebadad with Javed Sheikh, also killed in the encounter, in his blue Indica MH-02 JA 4786 on June 12, 2004, three days before they were shot dead.
