Hyderabad:
At about noon, a police inspector heading a station in the heart of Hyderabad got a distress call. A woman appeared to be in labour opposite a popular cinema, Shanti Theatre.
Bheem Reddy quickly dispatched a team that included women constables.
It was too late to shift the woman who needed help. So a makeshift labour room was set up with sarees and bedsheets on the side of the road; policemen stood guard to ensure crowd control and privacy.
The heroes of the hour - policewomen Sharadha, Shoba, Jyothi and Divya - showed nerves of steel in their impromptu roles as midwives.
And then came the news - It's a boy! The baby and mother were cleaned up, dressed in new clothes, and moved to a nearby government hospital.
