New Delhi:
In 2004, when BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was seeking to return to power in the national elections, they launched a campaign called 'India Shining' to woo the voters by showcasing their achievements. Nearly a decade later, the UPA government, led by the Congress, is treading a similar path.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry today released a lot of audio-visual clips, as part of the government's 'India Story' campaign, to highlight its "achievements". The UPA has spent crores to tell this India story to the people of the country; it will be advertised across TV channels and on Internet.
The UPA's ad campaign comes on a day when the BJP launched a website dedicated to, what it calls, the "dark decade of governance.'' "Tell me, when has the BJP ever appreciated any of our initiative? When you have a negative mindset, you will see negative things. NDA's India Shining campaign was a make-believe world, Bharat Nirman is for real. If BJP can't see the work, they are on another planet," counters I&B Minister Manish Tewari.
But BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad retorts, "In the case of UPA, only they are shining." Mr Prasad listed out the scams that have taken place during the UPA - starting from the 2G scam to the more recent AgustaWestland helicopters. But Mr Tewari does not quite buy these arguments and points out that it is the Right to Information act that has exposed many of these scams.
Apart from Right To Information, the UPA government has prominently showcased other schemes like the Land Acquisition and Food Security bills that are yet to get parliamentary approval. When NDTV pointed this out, Mr Tewari said, "We have shown our intent of passing pro-people legislation and policies. Our remit is to publicise the government schemes and that's what we are doing."
The new AV clips released by the government showcase some of UPA's flagship schemes like the Food Security Bill, Land Acquisition Bill, Direct Benefits Transfer, Aadhar cards and the proposal to set up a regulator for the real estate sector. So far, this year, the UPA government has spent about Rs 12 crore on these ads.
