J&K: 1 killed in CRPF firing in Sopore, third in a week

Srinagar: The situation continues to be tense in Kashmir after one more civilian died in a firing by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Sopore on Sunday. The town was already under curfew following death of two civilians in CRPF firing on Friday.

So far, five civilians have died in CRPF firing in past two weeks in the Valley.

Taking strong view of these incidents, the state government has said that these acts have to come to an end. In fact, they have even said that the Home Minister should visit the Valley.

"Firing like this was totally unwarranted. It added to the fuel. Whatever the CRPF has done is very unfortunate and gives out the wrong message," said Ali Mohammad Saga, Law Minister, J&K.

However, the paramilitary force has clarified in a statement, "There was no firing in Sopore on Sunday. It was tear gas shell that hit one person who later died in hospital. Tear gas was used after there was heavy stone throwing."

The victim, identified as Bilal Wani of Kralteng, Sopore, was hit on the neck, police said. Wani was rushed to Srinagar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they said.

On June 25, two youths were killed and three others injured allegedly in firing by CRPF after the security personnel were attacked by protesters following an encounter in which two militants were gunned down.

The incident sparked protests across the Valley with both factions of Hurriyat calling for a shutdown.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in Sopore after the killings. The government had on Saturday ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.
