Srinagar, New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday night and voiced his strong concern over civilians becoming victims of action in the Valley by paramilitary forces.
The two leaders agreed on the need to bring an immediate end to this cycle of violence.
Chidambaram said the Union government is committed to supporting the state government in its endeavour to bring peace and order in the state and will do everything possible in this regard.
Asking him to intervene in the matter, Omar asked the Home Minister to visit the state. The visit is likely to take place in a day or two.
There was tension in Sopore after CRPF personnel fired rubber bullets on a stone-pelting mob that had defied curfew in Sopore town on Sunday, killing a 20-year-old youth Bilal Ahmed Wani.
State Law Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar described the firing by CRPF personnel on protestors in Sopore as "totally unwarranted", saying such action was adding fuel to the fire.
"This was totally unwarranted. Firing (by CRPF) at this point of time is only adding fuel to the fire. What they have done is very unfortunate and it will send a very wrong message," he said. (With PTI inputs)
