Srinagar:
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken tough action against a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) - a senior bureaucrat - for allegedly beating a newly elected sarpanch in Handwara.
The SDM has been attached to the DC's office and an enquiry ordered.
The sarpanch says he was beaten by the SDM when he asked for a bus service for students in the area.
The action by the Chief Minister is significant in a state which is battling many odds to see grassroots democracy take shape. The historic 16-phase panchayat elections which are currently underway have seen a phenomenal turnout and Omar Abdullah has already started interacting with the new panchayat members.
