The two-month-long dry spell in Kashmir ended as many parts of the Valley received snowfall, while other parts including Srinagar city were lashed by rains.
The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been blocked due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and Patni top. Over 400 vehicles are stranded.
Snowfall was reported from parts of south and north Kashmir, including famous ski resort Gulmarg. Three inches of snow accumulated in south Kashmir's Shopian town, while two inches snow was recorded at Gulmarg, Damhal Hanjipora, Khag, Gurez and Yusmarg.
The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 3.2 degrees, which was 2.7 degrees higher than Tuesday. Ladakh region also witnessed slight improvement in night temperature with Leh and Kargil recording minus 13 degrees and minus 12.2 degrees, respectively.
Delhites woke up to a comparatively warm morning with the night temperature rising above 9.8 degrees, three degrees above normal and up by 2.4 degrees from yesterday's minimum.
Meanwhile, two persons died in Uttar Pradesh as cold wave-like situation prevailed in major parts of the state with mercury dipping further taking the toll to 13 this season.
One person each died in Maharajganj and Ballia due to cold overnight, official sources said.
The higher reaches and tribal area in Himachal experienced moderate snowfall while mid and lower hills had scattered rains as western disturbances approached the state, breaking the four-week-long dry spell.
The mighty Rohtang, Kunzam, Saach and Chansel passes had moderate snowfall while Kalpa, Pin, Hangrang, Lahaul Spiti and Pooh tribal areas received mild snow.
Kalpa received 10 cm of snow while Lahaul, Spiti, Pin and other high mountain areas had 10 to 15 cm of snow.
The sky remained clouded in Shimla which experienced intermittent rains bringing down the maximum temperature to 10.5 degrees against 14.2 degrees on Tuesday.
The minimum night temperature, however, rose to 6.2 degrees, four degree above normal.
Minimum temperature rose from minus 0.1 degree to 4 degrees in Solan, 6.7 degrees in Palampur, 10 degrees in Nahan and 5.2 degrees in Dharamsala, the MeT office said.
Most places in Haryana and Chandigarh got temporary respite from the severe cold wave sweeping the plains during the last three weeks as minimum temperatures rose between 3-6 degrees in the region.
However, Punjab continued to reel under the chill.
According to the MeT office, rains also lashed many places in the region ending prolonged dry spell. Light to moderate rains lashed Chandigarh, Hisar, Ambala, Karnal, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Ludhiana and Patiala.
After recording the season's coldest night so far at 4 degrees on Tuesday, the minimum on Wednesday rose to 7.5 degrees in Chandigarh, up two degrees than normal.
