A student of Jadavpur University died after falling from the hostel balcony on August 9

Kolkata:

Newly-appointed interim Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University Buddhadeb Sau on Sunday said that the death of a student after being allegedly ragged and sexually harassed is the responsibility of the varsity "as a whole" and a proper security arrangement is needed on campus to maintain a healthy atmosphere.

Mr Sau called the death of the 17-year-old very unfortunate and heartrending.

"The responsibility is of the whole university and not of any one person... A proper security arrangement has to be made to ensure that a healthy atmosphere is maintained in the university," he said.

Amid clamours from some quarters for the installation of CCTV cameras in every part of the university, he said that it is not that this is the only solution.

"We will have to see whether CCTV or any other technology like RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) will be effective or human surveillance will be more useful based on an assessment of security threats," he said.

Buddhadeb Sau, who was appointed the interim Vice-Chancellor on Saturday by Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, said that steps have been taken earlier over allegations of ragging within the parameters of rules and guidelines.

Admitting that there must have been some lapses, he said, "We will have to ensure that such things do not happen again."

The tenure of the varsity's last full-time Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das, who served for nine years, ended on May 31.

Following that, the Governor appointed Amitabha Datta, the pro-VC of the varsity, as the officiating Vice-Chancellor but he resigned on August 4.
