Jagvinder Singh's funeral in Fazilka was attended by hundreds of his supporters.
Chandigarh:
As gangster-turned politician Jagvinder Singh alias Rocky was cremated on Monday, his rival gangs vied on Facebook to take credit for his murder -- updating their status from behind the bars.
Jagvinder Singh was returning to Chandigarh from Shimla on Saturday when he was shot by a group of men near Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh. He died on the spot.
Within a few hours, gangster Vickey Gounder posted pictures of Mr Singh's body on Facebook, claiming his gang had avenged killing of gangster Prabhjit Singh alias Dimpy. Prabhjit was shot dead in Chandigarh in 2006 - Mr Singh was allegedly involved in the murder.
The police are still clueless on how Grounder managed to update his Facebook status from Ferozepur jail.
Rival gangster, Jaipal, though, said Grounder was bluffing. In his update, Jaipal said he was the one who had eliminated Mr Singh. Parampal Palla, Mr Singh's driver who injured in Saturday's shootout, had identified the killers as Jaipal and his associate Tirath.
The police, who have been bemused by the Facebook war, said they had identified the killers from CCTV footage and will soon arrest them.
Mr Singh had several cases against him -- including murder, kidnapping and violation of Arms Act. In 2012, he had turned to politics and contested the Assembly Polls from Fazilka. But he had lost.
His funeral at his village Jhuggian Kehar Singh in Fazilka district was attended by hundreds of his supporters. Dhananjai Singh, muscleman and former Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh, was a surprise visitor.
