Urai: The jailor of a prison in Uttar Pradesh has been caught on camera greeting BJP legislator Sangeet Som who was arrested yesterday for his alleged role in the Muzaffarnagar communal riots.

The video shows the jailor LP Singh standing in plainclothes at the Urai prison in Jalaun district, his hands folded in greeting as the BJP leader walks into the prison premises. A couple of policemen standing with the jailor welcome Mr Som with a salute.

Two BJP legislators - Mr Som and Suresh Rana - and a Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Noor Salim Rana have been arrested so far in connection with the violence that left nearly 50 people dead and more than 40,000 homeless in Muzaffarnagar earlier this month.

While Mr Rana has been sent to a prison in Banda district, Mr Rana will be lodged at a Mirzapur jail. Charges have also been filed against several other politicians for the riots, including from the Congress.

The incident comes on a day when an IPS officer in Moradabad has been suspended for brutally assaulting his staff that made a Samajwadi Party leader wait at his house.
