A policeman died in the line of duty and three terrorists were shot dead in an overnight encounter near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The gun-battle broke out after a joint team of J&K police and the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) came under attack.
A senior police officer said that the terrorists attacked a check-post in an attempt to snatch weapons from policemen at Panthachowk, on the outskirts of Srinagar, late last evening. The security personnel retaliated and when the terrorists tried to escape, they were chased and cornered in an adjacent neighbourhood.
"During initial shootout we lost an assistant sub-inspector of special operations group of police. In the encounter that followed, which ended this morning, three terrorists were killed" said Vijay Kumar IGP Kashmir.
This is the third major encounter in the last 36 hours in Kashmir; 10 terrorists have been killed since Friday evening.
On Saturday, a soldier was killed in the line of duty and three terrorists were shot dead in an encounter in south Kashmir's Pulwama. The encounter broke out after security forces launched a late-night anti-terror operation at Zadoora area in the south Kashmir district.
On Friday, four terrorists were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Kiloora village of Shopian district. The police said two of the four terrorists who died were involved in the kidnapping and killing of a panchayat member linked to the BJP.
"One terrorist surrendered. We have taken him into custody and he will be dealt with as per law," an officer had said on Friday.
