Jammu And Kashmir Unlikely To Get A Chief Minister Even Next Week

Mehbooba Mufti has been chosen by the PDP-led alliance to be Jammu and Kashmir's first woman chief minister.

Srinagar: The wait for a new government in Jammu and Kashmir could extend beyond the four day mourning period after the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. Mr Sayeed died on Thursday morning and sources have told NDTV that his daughter and People's Democratic Party or PDP president Mebhooba Mufti - chosen as the next chief minister by the ruling coalition led by the party - is not willing to take oath immediately.

Sources added that the oath taking is unlikely even next week. A notification putting the northern state under governor's rule from Friday, in the absence of a government, is expected later today. This will be the second time in the last one year when governor's rule is imposed in the state.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi is visiting Srinagar tomorrow to offer condolences to Mr Sayeed's family. The Congress and the PDP have been allies in the past but the party is currently a BJP ally. Mr Sayeed headed a PDP-BJP government in the state.
