Jammu on alert after Pakistan firing

New Delhi: The ceasefire violations by Pakistani armed forces along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International border is clearly worrying New Delhi.

And now, India is responding to these attacks with the Border Security Force (BSF) fighting fire with fire.

Two BSF soldiers were injured in the firing that began from Pakistan on Thursday night in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu. The firing continued intermittently till Friday afternoon.

On Friday morning, the BSF lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over the incident at a flag meeting.

"At the flag meeting we lodged strong protest, but Pakistan has not agreed as usual. They said their men have not fired. After the brief meeting both sides agreed we should maintain peace," said J B Sangwan, DIG BSF, Jammu.

Though Pakistani Rangers deny firing on Indian posts, the tension on the border is palpable. BSF now says they are closely watching the situation and will retaliate adequately if there is any more cross border firing.

"We are keeping an eye on the situation and will see," said AK Saroolia, IG BSF, Jammu.

The forces don't rule out the possibility of a militant group sneaking into Indian side under the cover fire. So in Jammu, the police are on high alert.

"There is an apprehension that a group of four militants have infiltrated. We have plugged entry points," said Manhor Singh, SSP, Jammu.

Last week, about five rockets were fired from across the border near Attari in Punjab, now cross border tension has spilled over to Jammu and Kashmir. This is a clear indication that despite the ceasefire agreement peace on the border with Pakistan still remains very fragile.
